I have always been in search of the perfect DIY Toothpaste recipe. And that probably explains why I have so many different toothpaste recipes here on the blog (this recipe started things off, this oil-free recipe is another fave of mine, this tooth powder checks all of my boxes, and this one is perfect for the kiddos)! But honestly, I think I’ve finally found thee recipe. The consistency is perfect, it’s sweet but not too sweet, it helps to fight tooth decay aaand it’s easy to make. Give it a go yourself and let me know what you think. Here’s yet another way to make your own toothpaste at home.

Calcium carbonate
- Gently cleans and whitens tooth enamel
- Aids in remineralizing and reversing the effects of tooth decay
- Supports healthy bones and tooth enamel
Bentonite clay
- Rich in minerals and helps to remove toxins
- Is a natural polisher
- Reacts with metal, so be sure to use a non-metal utensil when handling
- Please make certain your bentonite clay is “food-grade” or safe for internal use. The one I use is linked here
Baking soda
- Is alkaline and anti-fungal
- Neutralizes acids
- Helps to remove plaque and tooth stains
Stevia
- An herb from the sunflower family often used for medicinal use and to sweeten teas
- Helps to reduce the formation of bacteria
- I used Stevia drops (linked here), but powdered Stevia could be used as well
Peppermint essential oil
- Has anti-inflammatory, antibacterial and anti fungal properties
- Has cooling and soothing effects
- Is a wonderful addition to your toothpaste, provided it is safe for internal use. Please take a moment and check to make sure it is safe before adding to this recipe
Aloe vera gel
- Kills the bacteria that causes cavities and gingivitis
- It is also anti-inflammatory
- Helps to give our DIY Toothpaste the gel and paste-like consistency
- There are many kinds of aloe vera gel out there, some are safe to ingest and others are not. Please make sure the one you use is safe for internal use. The one I use is linked here
Distilled water
- The best option for the cleanest DIY toothpaste possible
- It doesn’t contain any of the nasty minerals found in tap water
- If you don’t have distilled water, filtered water is a close second
Air-tight container
- I’ve used a silicone squeeze tube (linked here), but feel free to use a glass jar or any other air-tight container instead
- This tube minimizes contamination when shared with multiple people
- It’s also great for travel, and its wide opening makes filling and cleaning easy
How to make
- Get your mixing bowl ready and add:
- 2 tbsps of Calcium Carbonate
- Using a non-metallic utensil, add 1 tbsp of Bentonite Clay
- Followed by 1 tsp of Baking soda
- I added 30 drops of Stevia next, but the powder could work here too
- Next, add 20 drops of Peppermint essential oil
- Followed by 1 tbsp of Aloe Vera gel
- Add 1 tbsp of Distilled water at a time until you reach your desired consistency (mine only needed 1 tablespoon)
- Stir well to combine
- Add to your air-tight container
- All done!
Ways to use
- Use as you would normal toothpaste
- Apply a dime-sized amount to your toothbrush
- Brush to your heart’s content!
- Refrigerate in between uses
