How to make

  1. Boil 3 cups of water
  2. Add a sprig of Rosemary to steep
  3. Remove water from the heat and allow to warm (and steep). Mine took 1 hour
  4. Once warm, remove Rosemary and transfer into bottle
  5. Add a heaping tablespoon of Coconut oil
  6. Next, add 5 tbsp of Dr. Bronner’s mild liquid Castile soap
  7. Followed by 4 drops of Lavender essential oil
  8. Screw on cap tightly and shake to combine.
  9. Enjoy!

Worth noting

  • I’ve stored my DIY Dog Shampoo in a bottle, but you could use a spray bottle like the one I used to make my DIY Surface Cleaner instead for easy application

2 other people besides myself have used this dog shampoo. It is unbelievable. Worked immediately to stop itching. A dog that had to wear a cone everyday no longer has to wear it! Thank you so much for sharing this recipe.

If fresh rosemary isn’t available – would a rosemary essential oil work?

Hi Melissa — yes of course! You could start with 4 drops of Rosemary essential oil in place of fresh rosemary.

Hi! How long does the shampoo stay good? I would like to make a batch to have on hand but not sure how long I should keep it.
    Thanks!

Hi Rachel: Since this recipe uses all natural ingredients and no preservatives, I would say it would be good for 1 week, maybe 2 if refrigerated from the time you make it. Just keep in mind the coconut oil will solidify when cold, so you’ll need to allow time for it to liquify before using it. Hope this helps!

      Hi Lina:
Could you try coconut oil soap or Aleppo soap instead?
      Let me know!

Can this be used daily? I have a pup who gets filthy at the dog park, on the daily. I try to use puppy shampoo on him once a week and just water the rest of the week since I’ve read washing daily isn’t good for them. But most days, water alone just isn’t enough to get him clean (and we have a white sectional!)

Hi Sandy: The recipe is certainly safe enough to use daily, however every pup (and their coat, and the climate you live in) is different. I would increase usage and find a regimen that works for you. Good luck with the white sectional!

Is there a dog safe preservative we could add to the recipe? Seems a shame to make so much and it only last a couple of weeks. I’ll use it tomorrow for the first time, but my pup only has a bath about once a month, so if there was a way to preserve it it would be great. If not, I’ll have to make a much smaller dose I suppose.. I’ll let you k ow how it goes though. He’s been itchy throughout the summer as he usually is, but with autumn well upon us,, this should ease up….I hope.

Usually castile soap separates if it comes into contact with acidity, so I would take a look at your other ingredients that may have been too acidic (i.e., vinegar, or even hard water).
