Man, I wish these puppies were around when I was a kiddo. Here are cough drops you actually want to take. Pop ’em like candy cuz health. They are immune boosting, so you can take them in smaller amounts on the daily. They also prevent infections and support easy breathing if you’re sick. Scroll down to learn how to make them, as well as for details on dosage.

What you need

Shop the supplies

DIY Cough syrup

  • Immune boosting, high in antioxidants
  • Has antibacterial, anti-fungal, antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties
  • Prevents infections and supports easier breathing by opening constricted airways
  • The recipe for this DIY Cough Syrup can be found here

Agar powder

  • A vegan gelling agent extracted from red algae
  • It is odorless, tasteless and very little calories
  • Often used as a gelatin substitute

Silicon molds

  • Non-stick molds are perfect for making these gummy cough drops
  • They are made of food-grade silicone and are oven, freezer, microwave and dishwasher-safe
  • Eco-friendly and BPA-free

Dropper

  • Small droppers allow for precise filling of molds
  • Silicon molds (above) come packaged with 2 small droppers

Air-tight container

  • I repurposed a vitamin bottle for this batch, but a similar option is linked above
  • Reusing containers is an easy way to be eco-friendly and lower your plastic usage
  • Store-bought cough drops usually come in plastic that will eventually require recycling

How to make

  1. As an optional first step, place silicon molds onto a baking sheet and spray molds with oil. Set aside
  2. Add 1 cup of DIY Cough Syrup to a sauce pan
  3. Sprinkle 1/4 cup of Agar powder. Stir to combine
  4. Turn on heat to medium-low and stir constantly until mixture thickens
  5. After the mixture has thickened (or about 5 minutes), remove from the heat
  6. Use dropper to fill the molds all the way to the top
  7. Refrigerate or freeze until set
  8. Place finished drops into your air-tight container
  9. All done!

How to use

  • To prevent sickness (for immune support):
Take 4-8 cough drops per day (Young kiddos can take 2-4 per day)
  • Already sick?:
Take 4-8 cough drops, 3 times a day (Young kiddos can take 2-4, 3 times a day)
  • This recipe made 100-ish cough drops
  • Store air-tight container in the fridge for up to 2 weeks, but you could freeze for longer
