I love watching natural hair YouTubers. They give me so much inspo and ideas for hair styles and ways to keep my hair care routine fresh. One thing I always noticed, whenever someone used edge control they warned to not make it a daily habit. After wondering why for so long, I finally figured it out ⏤ the ingredients! The ingredients in these edge control products weren’t great. So why doesn’t someone make one with natural ingredients that won’t have your edges screaming? I think I’ve cracked the code ⏤ here’s how to make your own edge control at home. It’s made with natural ingredients that are known to nourish and condition hair strands. Enjoy!
What you need
Candelilla wax
- Natural vegetable wax extracted from the Candelilla plant
- Rich in nutrients and prevents moisture loss in scalp and hair
- You can substitute beeswax here if you don’t require this to be a vegan edge control
Olive oil
- Stimulates hair growth
- Is a natural hair conditioner
- Adds shine
Castor oil
- Stimulates hair growth
- A natural hair conditioner
- Combats hair loss and reduces dandruff
Lavender essential oil
- Fortifies scalp
- Known for its antibacterial, antimicrobial and antioxidant properties
- Fresh, calming fragrance
Rosemary essential oil
- Discourages hair loss
- Nourishes the scalp and promotes hair growth
- Increases hair thickness
Air-tight container
- I snagged these reusable tin round containers from Amazon (linked above)
- I also repurposed a glass jar for the initial stages of the recipe, make sure both of your containers are heat-safe

How to make
- Fill a lidded pot halfway with water and place on medium-high heat
- Meanwhile, open up your heat-safe air-tight container and get ready to add:
- 1 tbsp each of Candelilla wax and Castor oil
- Next add 2 tbsps of Olive oil
- Stir to combine
- Close it well and add to the pot
- Heat until the mixture is completely melted. Mine took about 15 minutes
- In the meantime, to prepare your air-tight container, add 10 drops each of Lavender and Rosemary essential oils
- Swirl gently to combine
- Once the mixture has completely melted, remove from the heat and pour into your air-tight container
- Give it a stir to combine with the essential oils
- Set aside and allow to cool completely
- You’ll know when it’s ready when the mixture goes from transparent to opaque and it is cool to touch
- Add your lid
- All done!
Ways to use
- Use a small brush to apply a tiny amount to baby hairs. A little goes a long way!
- This edge control works great on baby hairs, side burns and can also be used to tame fly aways
- Store in a cool, dry place

Thanks so much for sharing this recipe! I can’t wait to try it out. One suggestion: If it’s possible to improve this recipe with added ingredients/processes, then start a small/solo proprietorship online business and establish your recipe as a trade secret for your business. Then make and sell it. Here’s a resource about trade secrets: https://www.uschamber.com/co/start/startup/how-to-define-and-protect-trade-secrets
